1. Regeneration of Silicone after Absorbing Water

The moisture in the silicone must be removed before regeneration. You can remove the extra moisture with electric furnace, heating and hot air. The temperature for removing the additional moisture should be controlled at 120-180℃. For blue gel indicator, discoloration silica gel, and blue silica gel, the temperature should be controlled at 100-120℃. Industrial silica gels should not exceed the maximum temperature:

Maximum temperature of coarse-pored silica gel: 600℃;

Maximum temperature of fine-pored silica gel: 200℃;

Maximum temperature of blue glue indicator (or discoloration silica gel): 120℃;

Maximum temperature of silica-alumina glue: 350℃.

The moisture of the silicone must be controlled below 2% before being put into use again.


2. Regeneration of Silicone after Adsorbing Organic Impurities


Coarse-pored silica gel can be regenerated after being placed in a baking furnace. Increase the temperature gradually to 500-600℃ until the rubber particles turn white or yellow-brown. It usually takes about 6-8 hours. For fine-pored silica gel, the maximum roasting temperature should not exceed 200°C.


Place silica gel in saturated water vapor to reach saturation and then soak it in hot water for rinsing. You can also use some detergent to remove waste oil or other organic impurities, and then washed it with clean water. After being dried and dehydrated, you can get a regenerated silicone.

⒊Solvent Cleaning

We all know that silicone can adsorbe organic matter. Select an appropriate solvent to dissolve the organic matter adsorbed in the silica gel, and then heat the silica gel to remove the solvent.

Extra Tips

⒈When drying and regenerating silica gel, pay attention to increasing the temperature gradually, so as to avoid the burst of rubber particles.


⒉When calcining and regenerating silica gel, using too high temperature will cause changes in the pore structure of silica gel, which will significantly reduce its adsorption effect. For blue gel indicator or color-changing silica gel, the temperature of desorption and regeneration should not exceed 120℃, otherwise the color development agent will lose effect due to the gradual oxidation.


⒊ Generally, the regenerated silica gel should be screened to remove fine particles to achieve the particles uniformity.


4. It is not recommended to regenerate silicone at home for safety concerns. If you are really tired of the silicone baby items you bought when your baby is small, you can take it as a souvenir or just buy other silicone products you want. It won’t cost much anyway.


5. Many people will ask, is it safe to use silicone kitchenware when cooking? The answer is yes. The silicone product can endure -40-160 degrees and produces no harmful matters when being heated unlike plastics, so you are rest reassured.



Storage and Packaging

Silica gel has a strong moisture absorption capacity, so it should be stored in a dry place. It should not be placed directly on the ground. It can be packed with steel drums, paper drums, cartons, plastic bottles, polyethylene plastic composite bags, flexible container bags, etc. Avoid rain exposure and sun exposure during transportation.
